Getting Real -- New Work By Moira Villiard

Bildungsroman is a German term for a novel in which the hero or heroine attains an understanding of what he or she is. There is a sense in which the story lays out the circumstances that hem in the main character leading to an epiphany, a moment of deep clarity. Like life itself.

Next Monday, June 6, is the opening for Moira Villiard's exhibition of new work titled Real. The opening reception is from 5 - 7 p.m. at the Zeitgeist. Here's information on the show, provided by the artist...

Description: REAL is a retrospective art exhibit featuring iridescent portraiture and surrealism created by Moira Villiard, the artist whose present preoccupation is navigating the ins and outs of what it means to be “real". The paintings and drawings on display will be vibrant and bold, every color having been inspired by specific sounds or conversations experienced by the artist. After spending a rather unreal year physically unable to use her dominant hand to create artwork, this event will be Villiard’s first solo exhibition and includes pieces created during her most transformative years to date.

Biography: I am an ambidextrous, independent traditional artist, muralist, editor, poet, designer and filmmaker who, by some feat of pluralism, hopes better our community through these niches. Known for live painting demonstrations at cafes, fledgling businesses, event openings, and in classrooms, a major part of my philosophy is making art accessible and interactive. As such, I am currently a coordinator for the multimedia show Goody Night and remain an active recruiter of visual artists and musicians for my other creative endeavors.

My work tends to be an exploration of matter related to music and art, specifically in conjunction with idea-sharing and social movements, addressing stereotypes, and social class. Through the creation of portraits, I use each individual painting as an opportunity to share a message and to reflect on the conversations and sounds that inspire me. Each piece is treated as something of a metaphorical instrument, to be played in a grander song that will hopefully continue to resonate with (and inspire) audiences from all walks of life.
