See What Tomorrow Brings

"Lie down Betty, see what tomorrow brings." ~ Peter, Paul and Mary

It's the opening track on their album See What Tomorrow Brings, and it's lively. Many albums follow the same pattern, something lively followed by tracks that have a more reflective character. The dramatic "Save the Life of My Child" is followed by quieter poetic and melancholic riffs on Simon & Garfunkel's Bookends.

Here in the Twin Ports arts scene you will find similar rhythms if you get out and about this weekend. There's energy in abundance in some of what's happening and quieter spaces as well.

Friday evening down at the Zstudio from 5-6 pm there will be an art opening curated by Limbo Gallery with some new work by a number of local artists. This is a Zumba Fitness center and if your stick around it's been recommended you wear white tomorrow because the Zumba Fitness® Black Light Benefit class will be kicking it up starting at 6:45. Just one more example of art in unexpected places in this town, this time mixing with fitness. It won't take long to break a sweat with this group if you stay. $10 Donation at the door. (Below the Electric Fetus, Michigan Street entrance.)

The Ochre Ghost has an opening tomorrow evening as well, featuring new exhibition titled Luke Holden's Heavy Flow. The show by Skid Mark and will feature watercolors, collages and prints. This is a public event and the doors will be open at 6:00 pm.

Two blocks West down the alley is the Prøve Gallery who is also having an opening tomorrow evening. I believe their event starts at seven and as with all their previous shows it's a "Must see" place to be.... if you're not already in three other places at once. If able I have more details tomorrow.

I've hardly begun to touch on all the theater gigs going on here in the Twin Ports. The Wave suggests that A Steady Rain is worth taking in. I myself am looking forward to the Steve Martin play Picasso at the Lapin Agile later this month at the Play Ground put on by The Rubber Chicken Theater.

And, of course, I'm looking forward to hearing Steve Martin pick his banjo later this summer, but that's a little further down the road. There is so much happening in between that I get breathless thinking about it. First, there's next week's Gallery Progressive featuring art openings and parties at 16 different art galleries on Thursday the 18th. I bet you didn't even know there were sixteen galleries in the Twin Ports. Saturday will be a follow up Gallery Hop all day long for Earth Day. At the end of the month there's the Homegrown Music Festival with something on the order of 180 local bands performing around the Twin Ports helping us rush headlong into May... which culminates in Dylan Fest here in Duluth and Dylan Days in Hibbing. There's plenty of time to tell you more about all that...

There's much more to tell, but it's top of the hour and time to go to press. Put on your dancing shoes and enjoy the weekend. It's getting better all the time.
